Sara Shamma: Modern Slavery – A London leadership alumni event

As part of its London Leadership alumni event series, King’s hosted an exclusive Private View reception in Bush House Arcade of Sara Shamma: Modern Slavery, a new series of large-scale portraits by London-based Syrian artist Sara Shamma.

A result of a research-based residency as part of the King’s Artists programme at King’s College London, the exhibition draws attention to a pressing global issue: human trafficking and modern slavery are estimated to affect approximately 40 million people worldwide.

Guests had the opportunity to meet the artist and hear from Baroness Deborah Bull, Dr. Sian Oram (academic collaborator on the project) and curator Kathleen Soriano. Baroness Bull, King’s Vice President & Vice-Principal (London), and Senior Advisory Fellow for Culture opened the event by highlighting the King’s Cultural Community, which aims to bring together artists and cultural partners with staff, students and alumni, and Dr Oram outlined the academic research that is currently taking place in her department, and how it relates to the exhibition.

Sara Shamma: Modern Slavery is on display until 22 November at Bush House Arcade, King’s College London. Entry is free. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London and artist Sara Shamma as part of King’s Artists. It is supported by the King’s Sanctuary Programme and by the university’s Culture team.

Hours: 1 October – 22 November 2019 | Monday – Friday 10.00 – 17.00
