On Wednesday 9 October 2013, 85 guests came together on Guy’s campus for the John Fry Reunion Lunch; an annual reunion event for Guy’s medical alumni pre-merger (1930 – 1986) held in memory of the eminent GP John Fry. The lunch has been taking place annually since the death of John Fry in 1994 and is organised by the Alumni Office and the John Fry at Guy’s Committee, which is currently chaired by Tina Challacombe.

The event began with pre-dinner drinks in the Revelstoke Room at Henriette Raphael House, allowing everyone to find and greet old friends before moving to be seated for the sumptuous three course lunch in the Henriette Raphael Suite.

This year, the occasion was made even more special with the presence of Professor Sir Richard Trainor, who Professor Bob Walton gave  his heartfelt thanks to on behalf of the Committee for all his wonderful work during his time as Principal.

Before the dinner was served, the guests heard from Tom Crisp; the lucky recipient of the Maxine Hallworth scholarship, who explained what a huge difference the scholarship would make to his life and just how much he appreciated receiving it. Unfortunately, the recipient of the John Fry Scholarship; Sonya Saleem was unable to attend but she sent her sincerest thanks and wished everyone an enjoyable lunch.

After dinner, Dr Chris Mallinson (Medicine, Class of 1961) entertained everyone with his anecdote filled speech ‘As it seemed at the time’ about his time as a student at Guy’s and how things have since changed.

Challacombe then invited everyone to join the Principal and the Committee at Guy’s Colonnade for the unveiling of a special plaque in memory of the great philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. The Committee had had the plaque commissioned after the original went missing during the refurbishments on Guy’s campus.

Professor Maria Rosa Antognazza from the Philosophy department joined the Principal in saying a few words about Ludwig Wittgenstein before they unveiled the plaque together to a shower of applause, everyone raising a glass to toast the occasion.

Afterwards everyone was invited to take a look around the Gordon Museum to warm up and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with the curator Bill Edwards before heading home, many promising to come along next year.
