Alumni recognised in New Year Honours 2019

King’s is delighted that 18 of our alumni have been recognised in the 2019 New Year Honours. Alumni from across the university have been honoured for their services in a diverse range of fields including community services, international development, and sport.

Sir Gary Streeter (Law, 1977), is MP for South West Devon. He has been knighted for services to Community Nursing, Children and Families.

Headshot of Frances Houghton

Rower, Frances Houghton (Hispanic Studies, 2003), was part of the silver medal winning Beijing Olympic team alongside fellow alumnae Katherine Grainger and Annabel Vernon in 2008. She has also been world champion in the quadruple sculls four times. She was awarded an MBE for services to British Rowing.

Other Honours

Natasha Archer (Hispanic Studies, 2005) is Kate Middleton’s stylist and close friend. She was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO), a dynastic order of knighthood initiated by Queen Victoria, for services to the royal family.

Dr Costakis Evangelou (Education Studies, 1994) combines being an archbishop at the Apostolic Christian Church with running a local boxing club in Edmonton, North London. He was awarded an MBE for services to Young People in North London.

Two former PhD students now working as consultant psychiatrists for South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust were also recognised. Dr Sridevi Kalidindi (PhD Psychological Medicine, 2013) was the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Psychiatrist of the Year 2017 and has now been honoured with a CBE for services to Rehabilitation Psychiatry, whilst Dr Gertrude Nimali Senevirante (PhD Psychiatry, 2006) received an OBE for services to Perinatal Psychiatry

  • Sheriff Colin Scott Mackenzie (Law, 1979), OBE for services to the community in the Western and Northern Isles of Scotland.
  • Dr Adrian Mark Owen (PhD Psychiatry, 2002), OBE for services to scientific research.
  • Dr Gertrude Nimali Senevirante (PhD Psychiatry, 2006), OBE for services to Perinatal Psychiatry.
