Celebrating alumni recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list

King’s is delighted that 18 of our alumni have been recognised in the 2018 Queen’s birthday honours list. Alumni have been honoured for their services to a diverse range of fields including healthcare, children and young people, conservation and education.

The Revd Sir Ralph Waller

The Revd Sir Ralph Waller (PhD Theology & Religious Studies, 1987) has been knighted for services to education. Sir Waller is the Principal of Harris Manchester College and is a Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford.


Professor George Griffin

Professor George Griffin (Pharmacology, 1968), has been awarded a CBE for services to public health and health research. Professor Griffin is Emeritus Professor Infectious Diseases and Medicine, St George's, University of London and was recently made President of the Federation of European Academies of Medicine.


Professor Matthew Hotopf and Dr David Craig

Two alumni who now work for King’s were honoured. Professor Matthew Hotopf (PhD Health Services Research, 2000), Vice Dean of Research at Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and Director of the National Institute for Health Research Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has been awarded a CBE for services to psychiatric research. Dr David Craig (Dentistry, 1983), Consultant, Honorary Senior Lecturer and Head of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry received an MBE for services to dental patients.


Anne-Marie Canning

Finally, we’d like to congratulate Anne-Marie Canning, who has been awarded an MBE for services to higher education. After several years leading our innovative widening participation initiatives, Anne-Marie now also has responsibility for student success at King’s and leads on research into social mobility.
