This past weekend, we welcomed over 250 dental alumni, staff and students to Dental Alumni Weekend 2016!

The weekend began on Friday afternoon with a Specialist Hygienists’ and Therapists’ Section Meeting. Guest speakers Dr Chris Dickinson, Dr Ravi Saravanamuttu and Mr David Kent led the meeting, which took place in the Gordon Museum.

Friday evening saw alumni donning their black tie attire for the Henry Schein Dental Dinner, held at the Hilton London Tower Bridge hotel. Guests enjoyed a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and a delicious three-course meal.

We were delighted to see so many alumni catching up with former classmates and old friends, and welcomed back five reunion groups who battled it out to win the title of ‘Largest Reunion Group’. The coveted title was won by the Guy’s 1986 reunion group, led by Jackie Belsham. Jackie rallied together 60 of her former classmates and friends, making it our largest reunion ever! The group also won tickets to a wine tasting session taking place during Alumni Weekend 2016. Congratulations!

The after dinner speaker, the Rt. Hon Alistair Burt MP, gave a rousing speech met with much applause and laughter from guests. Alistair is the appointed Minister of State for Community and Social Care at the Department of Health.

The Alumni Awards followed, and were awarded to Professor Tim Watson and Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya who were presented with the Alumnus of the Year award and the Distinguished Service award respectively.

The evening drew to a close with the Dental Society raffle, which was a huge success. Alumni demonstrated tremendous generosity with raffle sales raising over £1000 for the student endowment fund.

clinical day

The following morning, alumni arrived at Guy’s Campus bright and early for Clinical Day. The day began with the Herbert Memorial Lecture, given by Professor Mark Woolford, and was followed by three workshops focusing on restorative dentistry, oral cancer and student electives.

The Dental Trade Exhibition took place throughout the day and was a real highlight, with representatives from seven companies comprising of Biomet 3i, Coltene Whaledent, Henry Schein, PLANMECA, Septodont and The DDU. The day ended on a high with the Rod Cawson Lecture, given by Dr Jackie Brown.

Although the focus was on continuing professional development there was also plenty of time for guests to socialise with former classmates and friends over a cup of tea and a danish pastry! And judging by how quickly they disappeared, it’s safe to say they were delicious!

It was wonderful to see so many alumni attend the events over the weekend and we already can’t wait for Dental Alumni Weekend 2017! The Weekend will take place on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 March in 2017 so make a note in your diaries as we hope to see you there.
