Eight great King’s gifts for that special someone in your life

Looking for that last minute gift for a special someone? From top reads to stylish sports gear, your King’s community has you covered this Christmas.

For the young reader

Boy Giant

Michael Morpurgo (French and English, 1967) has written many award-winning books for children including War Horse, Why the Whales Came and Private Peaceful. His latest, Boy Giant: Son of Gulliver, is inspired by the classic story of Gulliver’s Travels and tells the story of Afghani refugee Omar on his journey across the sea.

For the music lover

Lead singer of Bloc Party, Kele Okereke (English Literature, 2001-2003), is back with his fourth solo album. The genre hopping 2042, is perhaps Kele’s most political album to date, drawing attention to the personal stories behind institutional racism. Check it out on Spotify.

For the would-be artist

Smashing It

Edited by our King’s Arts and Culture Alumni Award winner (2018) Sabrina Mahfouz (Classical Studies with English, 2005), Smashing It celebrates the exceptional works and words of 31 leading working-class artists in Britain. Featuring writing, lyrics and images by Wiley, Maxine Peake, Malorie Blackman, Riz Ahmed and many more, it also includes reflections from artists on how class has impacted their working lives.

For the kid in your life (or the big kid)

Reggie soft toy

Whether you’re looking for a gift for a future King’s alumnus or alumna, or for a current one who’s never quite grown up, you can’t go wrong with this cuddly little version of our university mascot Reggie. Alumni get ten percent off instore at the Students’ Union Shop (simply show your King's Connect profile to prove your alumni status).

For the dapper dresser

Do you have someone in your life who likes to cut a dash? These gold cufflinks from the King’s Student Union may be just the thing for that fancy New Year’s Eve party you’re heading to.

For the gym bunny

Gym bag

Alumni memberships at King’s gyms start at just £17.99 a month, but if the fitness fanatic in your life already has a favourite workout spot, why not gift them this stylish King’s gym bag to carry their kit around in?

For the whole family

The Pretender

Earlier this year Hazel Reynolds (English, 2008) told your alumni blog about how having a baby has benefited her business. Gamely Games makes games suitable for the whole family, including The Pretender, a hilarious social deduction game of mini-charades, bluffing and suspicion.

For the friend who has everything

…but is always losing their brolly. Beau Nuage is an umbrella company set up by two King’s alumni, Antoine Gros (Mathematics, 2013) and Aurélien Rinaldi (Mathematics with Management and Finance, 2013). The pair joined the King’s20 Accelerator programme in 2016 to help them launch a stylish new umbrella with a self-drying cover. No more forgetting your brolly leant against a wall to dry. Simply pop it in its case and put it straight back in your bag. Best of all, King’s alumni get a 25 per cent discount!
