Notable alumni: Charles Lyell

Rosalind Franklin

Lyell (1797-1875) was Professor of Geology at King’s College London in 1831-2 when part of his (literally) ground-breaking Principles of Geology was published. The Principles demonstrated conclusively that the earth must be millions of years old and opened the way for Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution.

Did you know: After the formulation of his theory of natural selection, Darwin was heavily conflicted about publishing it, and it was only with Lyell's urging that he made it public.
