Scrum Down: KCL Old Boy Alex goes head to head with current Club President Will

Robb Tagg Rugby

One of the most important events in King’s Rugby calendar is the Rob Tagg Memorial Match. Rob Tagg was a King’s student and rugby player who unfortunately died due to complications following an injury he sustained while playing for King's in 1999. Every year since, a team of King’s rugby alumni from around the world travel to Berrylands to play the current King’s team and remember Rob Tagg. This year, we put the captains of both teams head-to-head before the match to see which team is set for glory.

Will the youthful exuberance bring victory or will the Old Boys teach the current squad a lesson?

What was your finest KCL Rugby moment?

Alex Cooke, former Club Captain, Current Old Boy ‘Senior’
There are so many highlights.  How can you pick just one? Being elected Captain in my second year by such a great bunch of lads was no doubt my proudest moment.  However, in pure rugby terms it was probably beating North London in the play offs to go through to the BUSA Cup.  We’d had a great season and won the league.  On paper I’m not sure we were supposed to beat North London but everyone turned up that day and played as hard and as angrily, in a disciplined fashion, as I ever saw my team play.  My kind of win.

Will Brown, current Club President
My finest KCL Rugby moment has to be winning the treble in the 2014-2015 season. After being promoted into a new league, to win promotion again was hugely satisfying and really put KCL Rugby on the map. It was then great to put things right in the Varsity match after losing it the year before, and to finish things off we beat the Medics at the Macadam Cup for the second year running.

Winner: For the treble winning season, we’re giving this one to Will.

Best player you played with at KCL Rugby?

Old Boy Alex
In terms of potential that was subsequently recognised it would have to be Oogie (Ayoola Erinle).  I played him at No. 8 once, against Kent I think, and watched in amazement as he picked up on the half way, stepped round the back row and then the fly half and probably others on his way under the sticks.

Current Boy Will
Tricky one. Unfortunately, it has to be Tim Fawcett.

Winner: Hands down, the Old Boys have it with this one.

Best KCL Rugby nickname amongst your friends?

Old Boy Alex
My favourite is probably my name for Dan Docs – ‘Little Ferret Boy’.  For a wee lad you could send him into any maul and guarantee he’d get his hands on the ball.

Current Boy Will
There are many to choose from, but given the latest trend it has to be 'Pint McPintpinter.'

Winner: ‘Little Ferret Boy’ : memorable, inventive and slightly offensive. Arguably the ideal qualities for a nickname. We’re giving this one to Alex and the Old Boys.

Six Nations 2016: who is going to win?

Old Boy Alex
England.  Always.  Irrespective of form and talent.

Current Boy Will
I'd love to say England, but I think Scotland are going to have a pretty strong say in this year's tournament given their RWC showing and the form of some of their players. I'm going to go against the grain and say that Scotland vs. Ireland will be the decider.

Winner: A bold call from Will, the Current Boys have this one.

Rob Tagg 2016: Final score prediction?

Old Boy Alex
Old Boys by one meat pie [try].

Current Boy Will
I hear the Alumni have a pretty dodgy midfield, so 35-25 to KCL.

Winner: Unfortunately for Will that dodgy midfield didn't seem too dodgy at all, with the Old Boys taking home a comfortable 54-7 victory!

With thanks to Ben Philip.
