2012's Dental Alumni Weekend is most successful yet

On the first Friday of March 2012 more than 200 dental alumni, staff and students attended the biggest Dental Dinner yet at the luxurious Hilton London Tower Bridge Hotel. It marked the beginning of the annual King’s College London Dental Alumni Weekend, and saw the announcement of The 2012 Dental Award winners, entertainment from KCL Jazz Society’s Jazz Quartet and the Dental Society raffle, which raised over £700 for the student endowment fund.

The Alumnus of the Year Award was this year shared by two alumni, Professor John Greenspan (RDH, Dentistry, 1964) and his wife, Professor Deborah Greenspan (RDH, Dentistry, 1964), and the Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr Martin Kelleher (Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute). There was a prize for the biggest reunion, which was awarded to Susan N’Jie and her Guy’s 25 year reunion group, but many reunion groups were in attendance; RDH 50 year, Guy’s 50 year KCSMD 40 year, the 69 club, KCSMD 20 year and GKT 10 year.

Following Friday afternoon’s three specialist meetings (Hygienists & Therapists, Orthodontics and Endodontics & Prosthodontics) was Clinical Day on Saturday 3 March, with over 250 attending the lectures on Guy’s campus. The focus was continuing professional development, but reunion was also a big part of the activities. Key events included The Herbert Memorial Lecture, delivered by Professor Brian Miller, and Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya who rounded off the day with The Rod Cawson Lecture.

Judging by this year’s success we can look forward to bigger and even better events for next time. Dental Alumni Weekend will take place on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 March in 2013. Photos from this year’s Dental Dinner can be viewed here.
