Conference: Biological Psychiatry

Translating advances in biological psychiatry into theraputics - moving from bench to bedside. On 24 & 25 November 2008, the Institute of Psychiatry organised a very special conference honouring the memory of Professors Robert W Kerwin & Lyn S Pilowsky. The conference was held at Denmark Hill and included symposia, lectures and closed with a Maudsley Debate on biological research and psychiatry. Several alumni attended the two day conference and were offered a special discounted rate as well as 12 CPD points. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for professional development and was a fantastic occasion for alumni to meet friends, old and new. We are hoping to hold more of these events for alumni, so this conference was just the first of many possibilities to stay connected to the Institute.

1968 Guy's Medical Graduates Reunion

Forty years since graduation Guy's medical graduates reunited on 22 November 2008.  54 graduates and their partners attended a luncheon at the Menzies Welcome Hotel, a mile outside Stratford-upon Avon. The venue proved to be very satisfactory and the whole experience most enjoyable, on a crisp sunny winter’s day.

There were members from all over the country, plus some who flew in from Australia, Canada and USA, with a number staying the night. The lovely historic town of Stratford provided an excellent curry evening for continuing revellers, although the RSC was closed between productions.

Alumpic Games 2008

Alumni and student teams battled it out in rugby, netball, football and even a tug of war on Saturday 11 October. Alumni teams were triumphant and won the games overall. The rugby alumni team also won the 'most improved team' cup. Teams celebrated into the night at the Alumpic Games dinner at the Strand, and after party at the KCLSU bar and Tutus.

Alumni Weekend 2008

In June 2008 over 400 alumni and friends returned to the College for Alumni Weekend. Alumni from the classes of 1983 and 1958 came to the Strand Campus to catch up with friends and celebrate the 25th and 50th anniversaries of their graduation. Alumni of all ages and disciplines also returned for a varied programme of events, with graduation years ranging from 1946 to 2007.

Highlights of the weekend included a performance from King’s Choir in Southwark Cathedral, tours of the campus and of Dr Johnson’s House, an alumni lunch hosted by the Principal, and a range of lectures, including a very well-received update from the Geography Department on The Impact of the Olympic Games on London.

If you would be interested in getting your friends together for a reunion on Alumni Weekend there are many way in which the Alumni Office can help. Please contact us on 020 7848 3053 or email on alumoff@kcl.ac.uk

Alumni & the City

On Wednesday 18 April, King’s held its third City Alumni Networking Reception.

The reception is an opportunity for city-based alumni to develop new business contacts during structured networking sessions. The event has been growing in momentum since the first reception in 2006, and now attracts alumni from many sectors.

On this occasion alumni were welcomed to the wine and canapés reception by the Principal, and then heard from guest speaker Ken Charman, who talked about his career as an entrepreneur and the work done by Simulstrat, a company which tests key business strategies through war-games methodology.

Coutts & Co. sponsored the evening and helped make the reception a success.

King’s is looking to continue these receptions on a bi-annual basis. If you are not already on the mailing list please email Cally Brown
