Kings College London

Alumni Q&A: Mark and Lucy Dillon

Mark Dillon (Law, 1984) and Lucy Dillon (née Stephens-Gresser, Law, 1984) met while studying at King’s. Lucy now works as Director of Knowledge Management at Berwin Leighton Paisner. Mark is a Consultant and Leadership Coach for organisations including the NHS, the Ministry of Defence and a range of professional service firms.

What did you do when you graduated from King's?
Mark: I went to Sandhurst, then law school, before joining Wilde Sapte in London. I followed an interesting and not always planned course.
Lucy: I went to the Sorbonne, then law school in London, then joined Linklaters.

Where did you live when you were at King’s?
Lucy: I had digs near Selfridges.
Mark: I lived in Plats. Particular memories include the Brixton riots, a burning 2CV outside the main gate, Dave Mech Eng’s home brew, squash against Med Fac, JM’s dinner jacket, crappy food and Theakston's Old Peculiar.

Who was your favourite lecturer?
Lucy: Professor Guest. A legend.
Mark: Professionally speaking, that’s a tough one to answer in such a talented faculty. On a personal level, Adrian Lynch. Superb comic timing and man of many parts.

Were you involved with any clubs and societies?
Lucy: No. I was far too studious.
Mark: Too many, as my first degree testifies. Hockey, Drama, Law Faculty Society, Pagan (pork pie and Guinness), Borstal Project and the Mooting Society.

What was your favourite thing about King's?
Lucy: Its wonderful location in London.
Mark: The people I met there.

Do you keep in touch with many people you met at the College?
Lucy: Yes, there are some long and valued friendships that have stood the test of time. And a husband.
Mark: Lucy. I speak to her most days. Others from time to time – people pop up in the most unexpected places.

What do you wish you'd known at university that you know now?
Lucy: To take work less seriously.
Mark: The law. I was rather a late developer when it came to studying, but got a distinction in my MBA. Honest.

What do you do in your spare time?
Lucy: Family, running, gardening and powerboating.
Mark: Family, write novels, run and get out on the Solent.
